In one sense, Bruno “Salvo” Salvador is already living undercover: He is the son of a British missionary and a Congolese chieftains daughter, but his light complexion and Caucasian features enable him to “pass” in a racist world. His penchant for secrecy (which includes a clandestine affair) intensifies dramatically after he is drafted as an interpreter for plotters conniving to overthrow his homelands government. As usual, suspense master John le Carr?? manages to enmesh an ordinary person in matters of high state importance. A first-rate fiction by a major world novelist.
