During the American Civil War, the city of Richmond, Virginia, is plagued by famine and death. The city is under siege, and everyone is looking for a way to escape. Five prisoners of war decide to resort to an unlikely form of escape: a hot-air balloon. They are accompanied by a dog, and their journey takes them through a storm, only to crash-land on an uncharted island. Luckily, among these five men is the genius engineer Cyrus Smith who uses his knowledge to survive on the island. He manages to bring in some modicum of civilization through finding innovative ways to build a fire, make pottery, bricks, synthesize nitroglycerin, mine iron, build a simple electric telegraph, a cliffside home called ??Granite House?, and even a seaworthy ship. However, his genius may not be enough to explain the mysterious events which seem to happen on the island, some of them almost miracles in nature. Perhaps they are not alone on the island. Who is their mysterious neighbour, and why is his identity such a great secret?
